To make certain other users cannot connect via VNC in a non-secure way, use the -localhost option onthe VNC server, to prevent any connections that don't originate on 127.0.0.1. Never ran xstart - always just started vnc-server with the quickie settings, then connected from a VNC client through either a VPN or ssh tunnel. I haven't used VNC for about 6 yrs, but it didn't take much to get it working.

If you need VNC for some other reason, like trying to use android as a client, then x2go really isn't an option. People say it is like night and day after switching. The only trick is to setup ssh BEFORE installing x2go. None of the existing X/server stuff is needed.

x2go will install whatever dependencies it needs. I've used it from 5 different continents.

X2go removes all the old-school X/setup stuff too. It uses ssh credentials, so your ssh-keys already setup will just work. x2go is very stable and feels 2-3x faster than VNC.

If you need a Lite-GUI, I'd strongly recommend dumping VNC for x2go. VNC isn't exactly the best solution for remote management. That would be LXDE or XFCE or something lite.

Realized, that even vnc-only xserver needs GPU for calculations, so to get OpenGL support installed NVIDIA driver (340.104 and later downgraded to 340.102 suggested by launchpad). Installed 16.04 LTE server distro, 'apt-get install'-ed X11 and vnc support. NVIDIA Corporation G98 (rev a1) GPU (put there for initial OS install) The server runs on a bit old but fully functional HW:
